If you’ve read this previous post, you might have detected a bit of doubt from this author about the official story of the Moon landings back in the late 1960′s and early 70′s.

If you were surprised by that revelation, then maybe you haven’t seen the latest evidence NASA has offered as proof the Moon landings were real.

Back in 2009, around the 40th anniversary of the first alleged Moon landing, NASA released photos taken by their Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

LRO Sees Apollo Landing Sites

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, has returned its first imagery of the Apollo moon landing sites. The pictures show the Apollo missions’ lunar module descent stages sitting on the moon’s surface, as long shadows from a low sun angle make the modules’ locations evident.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, or LROC, was able to image five of the six Apollo sites, with the remaining Apollo 12 site expected to be photographed in the coming weeks.

The satellite reached lunar orbit June 23 and captured the Apollo sites between July 11 and 15. Though it had been expected that LRO would be able to resolve the remnants of the Apollo mission, these first images came before the spacecraft reached its final mapping orbit. Future LROC images from these sites will have two to three times greater resolution.

NASA | Screenshot

Of course there are larger images than the ones I posted above, but they pretty much tell the same story. If it weren’t for the labels, you wouldn’t know what you were looking at.

To be fair, NASA said that the orbiter hadn’t “reached its final mapping orbit”, so when it does, I’m sure they’ll release even clearer images of these landing sites.

Well, wait no longer, because this week NASA did just that.

NASA Spacecraft Images Offer Sharper Views of Apollo Landing Sites

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) captured the sharpest images ever taken from space of the Apollo 12, 14 and 17 landing sites. Images show the twists and turns of the paths made when the astronauts explored the lunar surface.

This interactive shows two LRO images of the Apollo 17 landing site. Click and drag on the white slider bar to wipe from one to the other. The left image was released today; the right image is a zoom-in on an LRO image released in 2009. LRO was moved into a lower orbit to capture the new image. The images do not line up perfectly because of differences in lighting conditions, angle of the LRO Camera, and other variables. Image brightness and contrast have been altered to highlight surface details. (Credit: NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center/ASU)

NASA | Screenshot

So let’s compare.

Apollo landing site taken in 2009:

Apollo landing site taken in 2011:

Well, I’m glad they cleared that up. I don’t know why I every doubted them. In fact, if you click on the larger images they provide, the evidence becomes even more compelling.

Take for instance this image of the Apollo 17 landing site labeled “maximum resolution”. The detail is quite striking. You can clearly see the foot prints in the lunar soil.

Of course, I’m being facetious. I actually created that image with MSPaint. I know I may have fooled some of you, because it’s so similar to the quality of images NASA has posted, but I’m sorry it’s not really from NASA’s archive.

Now I know what some of you might be thinking. “For crying out loud, these pictures aren’t bad! They’re taken from miles away, in outer space. Let me see you do better!”

The sad thing is NASA has done better.

Martian landscapes

Since 2006, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been orbiting Mars, currently circling approximately 300 km (187 mi) above the Martian surface. On board the MRO is HiRISE, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera, which has been photographing the planet for several years now at resolutions as fine as mere inches per pixel. Collected here is a group of images from HiRISE over the past few years, in either false color or grayscale, showing intricate details of landscapes both familiar and alien, from the surface of our neighboring planet, Mars. I invite you to take your time looking through these, imagining the settings – very cold, dry and distant, yet real. (35 photos total)

The Big Picture | Screenshot

The clarity is striking, isn’t it? Go ahead and check out the other hi-resolution images at The Big Picture. Don’t forget, Mars is considerably further away than the Moon.

At least that’s what some people are thinking, after Netflix announced they were splitting their unlimited streaming and one DVD-at-a-time plan, and would be charging you a little more for the two.

Well, I have to admit I didn’t like reading about the price increase yesterday, but apparently it upset a lot of people more than it did me.

Netflix Users Protest Proposed Price Increases With Social Media Firestorm

Netflix users stormed the streaming video and DVD rental services’ blog and Facebook page by the thousands on Tuesday to criticize a new pricing structure that will raise some users’ monthly bill by 60 percent.

Comment Highlights

I like the split but I think charging full price for both is going to lose y’all a few customers. I love having the option for both streaming and DVD but I’m not willing to cough up $16 a month for it.

A 60% price increase! Not many companies are bold enough to increase prices by 60% in these economic times. I hope the streaming selection gets a whole lot better. I’ve been buying a lot of videos from Amazon Instant Videos because Netflix doesn’t have them; maybe I need to switch to Amazon for my streaming, too.

This price change wouldn’t be so bad if you put more movies on streaming. Right now the streaming option is loaded with stuff nobody would ever rent.

This is a horrible deal for current customers. You’re going to be losing a lot of business with this decision.

The thousands of comments left on the Netflix Facebook page Tuesday struck similar themes.

PC World | Screenshot

Some of those highlighted comments are the nicer ones. There are some that are just down right ugly. I’ll let you go and read the comments people have left on the Netflix blog.

Likewise, TechCruch had this to say:

Dear Netflix, Thanks For The Customers! Signed, Redbox

…yesterday Netflix announced its new plans. Suddenly the cost to rent a DVD shot up, going from a nearly unnoticeable charge to almost double the cost. It didn’t make sense to keep the option and so I canceled it right away. Netflix’s own announcement email and blog post noted it’s easy to cancel, which, while honest, doesn’t inspire confidence in their pricing.

Instead, I believe I’ll be waiting in line up at Krogers to use Redbox’s DVD rental service the few times a year I need a particular DVD. I just wish I could see Netflix’s internal numbers. No doubt Netflix’s dedicated DVD customers will stick with them and continue to suck Netflix dry by renting countless DVDs every month. But I wasn’t costing Netflix any money; it was probably quite the opposite. Consumers like me — consumers who probably rented 2 DVDs last year — should have been valued by Netflix for paying for a service they rarely use. But instead they’ve drove us away. Oh well. Redbox is just as cheap and convenient and that’s all I care about anyway. (emphasis added)

TechCrunch | Screenshot

Obviously these people don’t have kids that can come up with some of the most obscure requests known to man. Look at the results I found for “Strawberry Shortcake: Big Country Fun” (requested by my daughter, of course) at Netflix and then Redbox.

The TechCrunch post also stated:

Netflix announced a new pricing scheme yesterday that effectively raised the price of a popular subscription plan by 60%. Instead of costing $9.99 for streaming and DVD rental, Netflix separated the services and priced them each $7.99, which results in a combined cost of $16.

But it’s not the $6 people are ranting about. Most of us would spend half of that amount on one silly coffee drink every day if we weren’t lactose intolerant. It’s that Netflix raised the prices without adding any value. There simply isn’t any way of spinning this as a benefit to the consumer and backlash is the result. (emphasis added)

TechCrunch | Screenshot

No value added? They’ve been adding value to their streaming service ever since it started. Does anyone remember the selection of movies when they first started streaming? I think the service is great and I think the price is fair. No, I don’t like the price increase, but I still think it’s fair. Regardless of what you might think, I’m not a shill for Netflix, I just remember how much I hated going to Blockbuster or even a Redbox kiosk not only to find they didn’t have the DVD I wanted, but also wasting gasoline in the process.

Maybe the backlash will sting enough to make Netflix reconsider a discounted price for bundling the two plans. I don’t know and ultimately don’t care. I guess I just want people to put this into perspective. Sure a 60% increase sounds like a lot, but we’re talking about $6 here. Now if the increase had been 400%, that would have been a story! (Screenshot)

UPDATE: Well at least I’m not the only one who isn’t spitting mad over Netflix’s price increase. And obviously none of those hateful comments on the Netflix blog are from columnist, Paul Thurrott.

Netflix Raises Prices, Garners Criticism

In my case, this change will result in about $5 in addition costs per month. Is it worth that? Yes, to me it is. But I understand where the additional cost will be problematic for many people. I also understand that Netflix likely expects many to simply drop the DVD part of their subscription. Which, when you think about it, was likely the plan all along. (emphasis added)

SuperSite for Windows Blog | Screenshot

UPDATE 2 (July 14, 2011): Well, Sarah Jacobsson Purewal of PC World certainly has an opinion about Netflix’s streaming service. She probably left one of those ugly comments on the Netflix blog. ;-)

Netflix’s 60% Price Hike: You’ve Gotta Be Kidding Me!

…Netflix kind of wants you to ditch the DVDs and start seeing the company as bleeding on the cutting edge of streaming video technology. So, what’s the problem?

Oh yeah, the problem is that Netflix’s streaming video service just can’t cut it.

Netflix’s streaming video service includes around 20,000 titles, the likes of which include such popular titles as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Reservoir Dogs. Other streaming video services, such as Hulu Plus, have fewer titles (Hulu Plus has about 400 current and classic TV shows), but they’re much more relevant–Hulu Plus boasts up-to-date episodes of House, Bones, and 30 Rock, while Netflix…doesn’t.

A choice between Netflix streaming and Hulu Plus streaming isn’t even a choice–Hulu Plus is absolutely better–but Netflix’s $2 unlimited DVD add on is what (had) saved the service for me. Admittedly, I don’t use the DVD service nearly as much as I use the streaming service, but I use it fairly often because Netflix’s streaming line-up is pretty pathetic.

The last videos I streamed from Netflix include such gems as Mega Python vs. Gateroid, Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus, and Egyptian Secrets of the Afterlife. Entertaining titles, to be sure, but you can rest assured they were not my first choice (the last DVDs I rented from Netflix were Avatar and The Sopranos: Season 6).

Okay, everybody has a right to their own opinion, and if you want to leave Netflix that’s fine, but come on, the last video you streamed was Mega Python vs. Gateroid? Netflix has a lot of great selections for streaming: Secretariat, Iron Man 2, the latest Star Trek movie. They also have the complete collection of The Andy Griffith Show, the original Mission Impossible, the Cosby Show, and that’s just scratching the surface.

If the best you can do is Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus, then I’d say there’s a problem with your video preferences and not availability. I can understand the anger over the price increase, but frankly, Purewal’s article, to me, is rather misleading about what Netflix has to offer.

UPDATE 3 (July 18, 2011): It just keeps getting worse for poor ol’ Netflix. Good thing we’re not addicted to our movies, or anything like that.

Netflix streaming service hit by outage

Netflix’s streaming service was down and unavailable for much of last night but has since been restored.

In a tweet posted around midnight Pacific time by the official Netflixhelps account, the company acknowledged that the streaming issues reported early had been fixed and offered an apology to its customers. This followed an earlier tweet from the account and a posting on the Netflix Facebook page at around 10 p.m. PT yesterday in which the company said it was working on the issue.

The outage had been brought to light a few hours earlier by several sources, notably a slew of tweets from disgruntled customers. Capturing the tweets and other reports, the Web site Downrightnow.com recorded the outage starting at around 4 p.m. PT yesterday and lasting at least sporadically throughout most of the night.

There’s been no official word from Netflix yet on the cause of the outage. The company did not immediately return CNET’s request for further details.

UPDATE 4 (July 20, 2011): It’s good, and it’s only getting better!

Reed Hastings Responds

This past Sunday, I penned an open letter to Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX ) . Writing with my tongue somewhat in cheek, I intended to capture the frustration some people felt, while keeping an even-tempered perspective on what this means for long-term subscribers and investors. But I never actually expected I’d get a reply.

A surprise response
Just before I went to bed Sunday night, an email arrived from Hastings himself, categorically addressing my concerns.

Taken on a larger level — as a message to all of the subscribers who have been irked by the rate hike — I think its contents are worth sharing here:

Hastings started with an apology: I’m sorry you felt jammed by our message.

He then responded to my plea to have the rate hike explained: We will take the increased revenue and mostly spend it on more streaming content … we want to be able to have stronger and stronger streaming.

And he concluded by making a fair assessment of what Netflix has to offer right now: It is a big increase, I know, but we feel each of the $7.99 programs are a great deal on their own.

What this means
If you read my previous article, you know that I wasn’t suggesting selling my shares or cancelling my subscription. Basically, I just felt a little cold, based on how the rate hike was carried out. This response pretty well addresses my concerns.

In some ways, we’ve been spoiled with an $8.99 plan that sent us DVDs and allowed us unlimited streaming. That model probably isn’t sustainable.

Moving forward, I’m fairly certain that Netflix would eventually be willing to sacrifice its DVD business to the likes of Coinstar’s (Nasdaq: CSTR ) Redbox. I don’t doubt that most of us will be using streaming to watch our movies 10 years from now.

So I was reading through my Google Reader, of which I’m subscribed to The Onion, and I noticed this headline.

CIA’s “Facebook” Program Dramatically Cut Agency’s Costs

But when I clicked on the link, it came back with a 404 Page Not Found.

So I did a search for the exact title of the post.

No luck.

Even a search for just “CIA” comes back with lots of other satirical articles about the CIA, but none connecting the CIA with Facebook.

Two options:

1) Either The Onion is trying to make it seem like they had to take the video down.

2) Or they must have touched a nerve.

UPDATE: Well, it appears the CIA was a little too late to cover up The Onion’s snafu, about their Facebook Initiative.

As dutifully reported above, there was evidence that The Onion posted a supposedly embarrassing revelation about one of the CIA’s black-budget projects. Apparently the CIA tried to cover up this revelation, by simply having the post deleted.

To late!

Unfortunately, the CIA didn’t take into account the efficiency of the RSS Feed Reader of their Google Initiative, which stores and retains information on any post made to a website’s RSS feed. Even if a post is later deleted, there is still a record of it retained by the Google Reader.

Apparently to avoid further embarrassment, it was decided to rely on the reputation of The Onion for it’s satirical content, as a means of denying any validity to the story. The video in question, was later restored to the website, and even written about at All Things Digital.

Facebook Actually a CIA Surveillance Program, Says the Onion

Facebook is a “massive online surveillance program run by the CIA,” conceived as part of the Patriot Act and so successful at information gathering that Congress recently reauthorized its funding, reports the Onion News Network.

All Things Digital | Screenshot

Okay, so I’m being a little funny here, but it is kind of weird that originally the story couldn’t be found, even when you did a search for the exact title of the story, and all the other stories posted that day were available on the website.

Here’s another screenshot of a search, I did at The Onion, for the exact title of the post (just like before), which now shows one result.

UPDATE 2: Now TechCrunch has posted about this. I didn’t know I was on the leading edge of breaking news. I beat these guys by two whole days!

The Onion: Facebook “Is Truly A Dream Come True For The CIA” (Video)

You did know that Facebook is a ‘massive online surveillance program run by the CIA,” right? And that Mark Zuckerberg is a CIA agent codenamed the Overlord? Just watch the Onion video above. It explains the whole thing.

In my lifetime I have learned that you can divide the world’s population into two groups–those who believe the United States landed men on the Moon (back in the late 1960s) and those who don’t. The former of which is in the majority, and the latter is…well, the minority.

But really, who’s saying we didn’t land men on the moon? Well, NASA apparently.

A Force Field for Astronauts?

…Space beyond low-Earth orbit is awash with intense radiation from the Sun and from deep galactic sources such as supernovas. Astronauts en route to the Moon and Mars are going to be exposed to this radiation, increasing their risk of getting cancer and other maladies. Finding a good shield is important.

…The most common way to deal with radiation is simply to physically block it, as the thick concrete around a nuclear reactor does. But making spaceships from concrete is not an option.

…Like charges repel. So why not protect astronauts by surrounding them with a powerful electric field that has the same charge as the incoming radiation, thus deflecting the radiation away?

…It sounds wonderful, but there are many scientific and engineering problems yet to be solved. For example, skeptics note that an electrostatic shield on the Moon is susceptible to being short circuited by floating moondust, which is itself charged by solar ultraviolet radiation. Solar wind blowing across the shield can cause problems, too. Electrons and protons in the wind could become trapped by the maze of forces that make up the shield, leading to strong and unintended electrical currents right above the heads of the astronauts.

…But, who knows, perhaps one day astronauts on the Moon and Mars will work safely, protected by a simple principle of electromagnetism even a child can understand.

NASA Science | Screenshot

Call me crazy, but why can’t we just use the same technology we had back in the ’60s. That seemed to work okay…didn’t it?

Today, I opened my email to find this little gem of a story about 2400 Canadian Soldiers deployed to Gulf Coast. Wow, this is huge, foreign soldiers on American soil! I can’t believe this isn’t all over the news. Well, it’s obvious we can’t trust the mainstream media to report the news accurately, so it’s no surprise this story isn’t on any of the major networks. But surely it’s making the rounds on the alternative news sites?

In fact, it is. If you do a Google search for “2400 Canadian Soldiers” you’ll get (at the time of my search) nearly 14,000 results.

See for yourself.

If you’ve read any of my blog, it should be obvious that I don’t shy away from a good conspiracy, or even a mediocre one, but I like my conspiracy to be backed up with some kind of evidence. Am I saying this story has no evidence for it’s claim of soldiers being put on notice of deployment? Yes, I am.

“Before It’s News” (Or is that “We Make The News”?)

Now, I didn’t go through all those thousands of Google search results, but I did check the hits on the first three pages. What I found was that all the reports, about the 2400 Canadian Soldiers, were linked back to one story from the website, Before It’s News.

2400 Canadian Soldiers deployed to Gulf Coast

2400 Canadian Soldiers and the 1 Combat Engineer Regiment based in Edmonton Alberta are on a 72 Hour notice for deployment to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (1 CMBG) frequently train with U.S. Army units including up to a 3 year secondment in the U.S. Military for Career Officers. The Canadian Engineer Regiment is often associated with the British SAS and their role in recent conflicts such as Bosnia and Afghanistan has seen them doing less reconstruction work and more urban pacification and counter insurgency operations.

Canada and the U.S. have signed an agreement that paves the way for the militaries from either nation to send troops across each other’s borders during an emergency, but some are questioning why the Harper government has kept silent on the deal.

Before It’s News | Screenshot

Did you notice that the headline says the soldiers have been “deployed”, but the article only states that they’re on 72 hour notice? Was this an attempt to make the story sound a little more titillating than it actually is? Na, I’m sure it was just a typo.

Anyway, the first sentence of the article makes the claim of soldiers being put on notice for deployment, and the rest of the story is about the U.S. and Canada basically playing an adult version of Red Rover. Well, that’s nothing new. This was reported back in February…of 2008.

Canada, U.S. agree to use each other’s troops in civil emergencies

Canada and the U.S. have signed an agreement that paves the way for the militaries from either nation to send troops across each other’s borders during an emergency, but some are questioning why the Harper government has kept silent on the deal.

Neither the Canadian government nor the Canadian Forces announced the new agreement, which was signed Feb. 14 in Texas.

The U.S. military’s Northern Command, however, publicized the agreement with a statement outlining how its top officer, Gen. Gene Renuart, and Canadian Lt.-Gen. Marc Dumais, head of Canada Command, signed the plan, which allows the military from one nation to support the armed forces of the other nation during a civil emergency.

The Ottawa Citizen | Screenshot

Now I’m not saying that foreign soldiers on U.S. soil isn’t a big deal, it certainly is, but to make the claim of soldiers being deployed or put on 72 hour notice, without a legitimate source, is at best unethical.

Enter The Scarlet Whore

No, I’m not making a derogatory statement about some dubious source. That’s the name of the website, Before It’s News listed as their source for the Canadian Soldiers story, Scarletwhore.com.

2400 Canadian Soldiers go to Florida

2400 Canadian Soldiers and the 1 Combat Engineer Regiment based in Edmonton Alberta are on a 72 Hour notice for deployment to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Canada and the U.S. have signed an agreement that paves the way for the militaries from either nation to send troops across each other’s borders during an emergency, but some are questioning why the Harper government has kept silent on the deal.

The Scarlet Whore | Screenshot

What makes this source questionable?

2400 Canadian Soldiers and the 1 Combat Engineer Regiment based in Edmonton Alberta are on a 72 Hour notice for deployment to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

With the exception of this one sentence, the story from the Scarletwhore is verbatim from the Ottawa Citizen story, and there is no source for the claim of soldiers being put on deployment notice.

Now I may be a little picky, but I’m not real comfortable referencing blog posts that have clearly plagiarized their stories, adding a few creative embellishments, as a source for “breaking news”. I’m even less comfortable about reporting news credited to a website called Scarletwhore, with the tag line, “In search of the Bitch.”

I know, I’m probably unusual that way.

Sad thing is, it could be true that Canadian soldiers are being deployed to the Gulf coast, and we should be told about it, whether it’s Canadian or even U.S. soldiers, but with unsourced allegations like this, no one will ever take it seriously–at least those who actually do some fact checking.

UPDATE:

After I published this post, a friend sent me this story, which is the closet link to Canadian Soldiers on U.S. Soil; however, it was also written the same year as the Ottawa Citizen story, 2008.

Canadians Train for Afghanistan in Texas

More than 3,000 Canadian soldiers preparing for a rotation in Afghanistan are wrapping up a pre-deployment training exercise the week of Feb. 27, that included U.S.-led instruction in countering improvised explosive devices.

The three-week 2nd Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group exercise, dubbed Exercise Southern Bear, concludes Feb. 28.

Soldiers from Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, in Ontario, arrived Feb. 7 to train for their deployment to Kandahar in September, Lt. Andrew Hennessy, the 2nd Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group spokesman, told American Forces Press Service. Once deployed, the soldiers will serve with the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team and as observer mentor liaison teams that embed with and train Afghan soldiers and national police.

About 80 percent of the troops will be deploying to Afghanistan for the first time, but they’re no strangers to tough missions far from home in Bosnia, Haiti, Eritrea and other hot spots, Hennessey said. “They’ve had lots of experience in lots of places,” he said.

The North Shore Journal | Screenshot

Unfortunately this still doesn’t corroborate the story from Before It’s News. I think it’s safe to say Before It’s News was trying to imply the Canadian Soldiers were en route to the Gulf because of the oil spill catastrophe, to help BP keep a lid on just how bad it is, or whatever they need them for. However, it’s just unsourced sensationalism causing unneeded worry. Besides, why does BP need Canadian troops, when they have their own private mercenaries?

UPDATE 2 (December 16, 2011): Now this is the kind of reporting I wish happened more often, by the alternative media.

End of Nations: Canada, the US and the “Security Perimeter”

…Meanwhile, the military merger of Canada and the US has proceeded in its own series of mutual agreements, beginning with the creation of NORTHCOM, the United States Northern Command, in 2002, which charged the US military with the protection of the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Mexico and Canada.

In February of 2008, the Canadian and American militaries signed an agreement allowing troops of either country to cross the border and carry out operations in the other country in the event of an emergency, such as civil unrest.

In 2010, the two countries signed the shiprider agreement, allowing the operation of specially designated vessels to patrol the shared waterways of the two countries by joint crew, consisting of both Canadian and American law enforcement. This agreement is cited in the new border proposal as an example of how cross-border policing can be implemented.

While perusing Wikipedia for information on influenza, I read the following paragraph. What caught my attention (emphasis added) were the claims made about the recent cases of swine flu in Mexico.

Influenza spreads around the world in seasonal epidemics, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands annually — millions in pandemic years. Three influenza pandemics occurred in the 20th century and killed tens of millions of people, with each of these pandemics being caused by the appearance of a new strain of the virus in humans. Often, these new strains appear when an existing flu virus spreads to humans from other animal species, or when an existing human strain picks up new genes from an a virus that usually infects birds or pigs. An avian strain named H5N1 raised the concern of a new influenza pandemic, after it emerged in Asia in the 1990s, but it has not evolved to a form that spreads easily between people. In April 2009 a novel flu strain evolved that combined genes from human, pig, and bird flu, initially dubbed “swine flu”, emerged in Mexico, the United States, and several other nations. By late April, the new strain was suspected of having killed over 150 in Mexico, and prompted concern that a new pandemic is imminent. However, confirmed cases were lower, with only 10 deaths by the end of April, 9 in Mexico and only 1 in the both the US and Canada.

Wikipedia | Screenshot

Now, to be fair, a pandemic is defined by meeting three criteria:

Emergence of a disease new to a population.

Agents infect humans, causing serious illness.

Agents spread easily and sustainably among humans.

Wikipedia | Screenshot

What I don’t like about the above paragraph is the statement that indicated a concern for an imminent “new pandemic” because of the deaths of 150 people in Mexico.

Yes, the paragraph goes on to state that only 10 cases of swine flu related fatalities have been confirmed, but let’s just be generous and say that all 150 of those deaths were caused by the swine flu.

Do the deaths of 150 people really create concern of a pandemic? I think we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves, and this paragraph confirms that, when we have a relatively small number of deaths, and we start shouting “pandemic”.

Am I being picky here, probably so. But let me give you some other numbers to put this whole “pandemic” into perspective.

Annual number of auto accident fatalities in the United States: 45,077

Annual number of auto accident fatalities in the World: 1,189,000

Wolfram Alpha | Screenshot

Now those are some serious numbers. Why aren’t we hearing daily about the deaths that occur from simply driving our automobiles? Well, I guess it’s because we’ve grown accustomed to this reality. But I’d be willing to bet (and I’m not a gambling man) if the media would focus on the number of auto accidents and deaths, like they have been with the “swine flu”, we’d be afraid to even step foot in our cars.

I’m not saying the death of anyone is a minor thing, but let’s just put the latest flu epidemic, or pandemic, or whatever into perspective.

So today, Denny’s is serving a free Grand Slam to everyone in America. You read that right, free.

Well, that’s quite a promotion. The announcement itself is rather ironic given that it was made during the Super Bowl, and the term Grand Slam relates to several sporting events, but none of them American football. They should have created a new breakfast plate and named it after something more football related like a “Blitz”, or a “Pooch Kick”, or maybe even more appropriate for today, the “Rush”, but I digress.

What really amazes me here is that Denny’s is basically saying they are prepared to feed EVERYONE IN AMERICA, according to this picture, two pancakes, two eggs, to sausage links, and two strips of bacon.

Currently the Census Bureau estimates the population of the United States at over 305,000,000. Now given the fact that Denny’s has said, “America, your invited”, we’d have to assume that Denny’s is actually saying they are prepared to serve over 610 million pancakes, 610 million eggs, 610 million sausage links and 610 million strips of bacon, between the period of 6 AM and 2 PM. Well, I don’t know how many Denny’s restaurants there are in America, but I contend that this is a logistical impossibility.

It doesn’t take long to do the math to realize that this is an impossible feat. Nevertheless, Denny’s has proposed to invite America and do just that. After weighing the reality of this proposal, I can only come to one conclusion, FALSE ADVERTISING!

That’s right, people, Denny’s has no intention of feeding everyone in America. How do I know? Well, let’s just look at the fine print of their own announcement.

It states:

Dine-in only. Offer limited to Tuesday, 2/3/09, 6 am to 2 pm in all Denny’s restaurants in the United States*, Canada and Puerto Rico while supplies last.

The Announcement goes on to say:

*With exception of 350 Baker Blvd., Baker, CA and 740 S. Main St., Las Cruces, NM.

Well, I don’t think it takes a rocket surgeon to figure out that Denny’s doesn’t intend to feed everyone in America a free Grand Slam, even though on the face of their own advertising that is indeed what they propose to do.

<s>If I were a good lawyer</s>… (sorry, that’s an oxymoron). If I were a <s>smart</s> cunning lawyer, I’d be whipping me up a class-action lawsuit for all the disenfranchised Americans who didn’t get their free Grand Slam on February 3, 2009 between 6 AM and 2 PM.

And that’s just one possible lawsuit for the people who wanted a Grand Slam. Don’t even get me started on the lawsuits one could work up for the disenfranchisement of people like the vegan crowd and so forth. The list could go on and on.

Was this a wise marketing ploy by Denny’s, or a huge legal nightmare? Only time will tell, folks.

One thing is for sure, I wouldn’t want to be working at Denny’s, today!

Plot to Kill Obama: Shoot From High Vantage Point

One of those suspects spoke exclusively to CBS4 investigative reporter Brian Maass from inside the Denver City Jail late Monday night and said his friends had discussed killing Obama.

“So your friends were saying threatening things about Obama?” Maass asked.

“Yeah,” Nathan Johnson replied.

“It sounded like they didn’t want him to be president?”

“Yeah,” Johnson said.

Maass reported earlier Monday that one of the suspects told authorities they were “going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a … rifle … sighted at 750 yards.”

Law enforcement sources told Maass that one of the suspects “was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative.”

CBS 4 Denver | Screenshot

As for the suspects of the “attempt”, I wouldn’t worry about Johnson, Gartrell or Gromek. They’re only referred to by their first and last names. We should definitely be worried about Shawn Robert Adolph, though; everyone knows assassins have three names.

It may not be a chicken or a car like Herbert Hoover promised in 1928, but Apple has had tremendous success delivering music to the masses with the iPod and iTunes.

The following blog post got me to thinking of how the iPod has changed the way people buy and listen to music since its introduction in 2001.

What Does Your Music Say About You and Do You Care?

If one were to judge me by the music I’ve put on [my mp3 player], I could be thought of as cool, sappy, tough, stuck in the 80s, a metal head, a nerd, a wussy or an intellectual lover of the classics (you know, like Mozart or Def Leppard). It’s a bit daunting to realize we are all a slave to the shuffle play (unless you don’t use your shuffle) when it comes to that first musical impression.

Licensed to Blog | Screenshot

At no other time in our history have people had access to such a wide range of music genres. I remember when CD’s came out, and what an innovation they were. It just wasn’t that convenient. You had to actually go to the store to buy one, you were limited to the selection the store had in stock, and it wasn’t always easy to carry around a CD player and additional CD’s. Today, you can literally have a music library of thousands of artists in the palm of your hand.

It’s All About The Music

Dave McGowan has recently done a series on the birth of the hippie generation, and how it was influenced by people who were directly connected with the military intellegence complex.

Inside The LC: The Strange but Mostly True Story of Laurel Canyon and the Birth of the Hippie Generation – Part I

One of the earliest on the Laurel Canyon/Sunset Strip scene is Jim Morrison, the enigmatic lead singer of The Doors. Jim will quickly become one of the most iconic, controversial, critically acclaimed, and influential figures to take up residence in Laurel Canyon. Curiously enough though, the self-proclaimed “Lizard King” has another claim to fame as well, albeit one that none of his numerous chroniclers will feel is of much relevance to his career and possible untimely death: he is the son, as it turns out, of the aforementioned Admiral George Stephen Morrison.

And so it is that, even while the father is actively conspiring to fabricate an incident that will be used to massively accelerate an illegal war, the son is positioning himself to become an icon of the ‘hippie’/anti-war crowd. Nothing unusual about that, I suppose. It is, you know, a small world and all that. And it is not as if Jim Morrison’s story is in any way unique.

the Center for an Informed America | Screenshot

After reading some of this fascinating series, it occurred to me that the music of this generation played a major part in the social chaos of the 1960s and ’70s.

Another revolution, with music at it’s core, was the Young Christian Revolution (maybe not the official term, but it sounds as good as any other) which began somewhere around the ’70s, and introduced us to Contemporary Christian Music (CCM); Christianity’s answer to rock music. However, if you take a look at the CCM groups of today, it’s hard to tell the difference between “Christian” and secular bands. After witnessing the evolution of CCM from the late 80′s, 90′s and through today, it appears it was always on a steady course to blur the lines between Christian and secular music.

Perfect Timing

It’s ironic how these two countercultures “came of age” around the same time in history (purely coincidental, I’m sure). These music “revolutions” had a significant impact in the development of our society. One causing social unrest with their psychedelic tunes of esoterically inspired lyrics. The other morphing Christian music into a more secular look and sound, no longer reminiscent of the religious denominations or churches of previous generations. Incidentally this all occurred around the same time that the New Age movement was starting to gain ground here in the United States. What a fluke!

“There’s something happening here…”

So the music of “the generation of love” was used to bring about social anarchy (while being completely controlled by military intelligence). CCM was used to “bridge the gap” between the Christian faith and the secular world, by blurring (erasing?) the lines between Christian music and secular music. And the iPod has certainly played its part in creating a generation where music interest is “anything goes” and it doesn’t matter what you have on you mp3 player, you can always change it to fit your mood (or whoever’s riding in your car).

Music has the ability to create strong emotional, even mystical, experiences, and this ability has been taken advantage of in the past. The iPod and iTunes creates a dynamic where one can be exposed to a VAST amount of music genres that was impossible to past generations. Thus making one all the more eclectic in their tastes, their sympathies, allegiances, and even their beliefs; certainly more than with the Jesus freaks and hippies of the past.

Pregnancy Boom at Gloucester High

As summer vacation begins, 17 girls at Gloucester High School are expecting babies—more than four times the number of pregnancies the 1,200-student school had last year. Some adults dismissed the statistic as a blip. Others blamed hit movies like Juno and Knocked Up for glamorizing young unwed mothers.

By May, several students had returned multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and on hearing the results, “some girls seemed more upset when they weren’t pregnant than when they were,” Sullivan says. All it took was a few simple questions before nearly half the expecting students, none older than 16, confessed to making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together. Then the story got worse. “We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy,” the principal says, shaking his head.

Now I don’t condone teenagers getting pregnant out of wedlock, and I’m certainly not thrilled to think that a group of teenage girls made some sort of pact to all get pregnant, but somebody got more upset about this than I did, because over the weekend this story exploded all over the internet and airwaves.

See for yourself.

The reaction was so strong that it lead the mayor of Gloucester (a city I didn’t know how to spell until this week), and the school superintendent to hold a press conference Monday morning.

Principal has ‘foggy’ memory of pregnancy pact

GLOUCESTER – In the strongest rebuff yet of the national “pregnancy pact” story that has scandalized Gloucester, top city and school officials say there’s no evidence that nearly half of the 17 pregnant teens at Gloucester High conspired to have babies together.

“We have not been able to confirm the existence of a pact,” said Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk, trying to defuse the national story on the school’s teen baby mama drama. “The information from the principal has not been verified by any other source.”

Boston Herald | Screenshot

Man, Time Magazine sure screwed up on this story! I can’t believe they relied on one, unverified, source to justify publishing this news. What’s this world coming to? Before you know it, we won’t be able to trust mainstream media for anything!

And then, no one failed to see ABC’s Good Morning America break this story wide open with one of Gloucester High’s very own pregnant teen, Lindsey Oliver, when she told the world, “there was no pact”.

17 Pregnancies a ‘Coincidence,’ Says Teen

One of the pregnant teenage girls at a Massachusetts high school denied that 17 students had entered a pact in an effort to get pregnant and called the high rate of pregnancies “unlucky” and a “coincidence.”

ABC News | Screenshot

There you have it, an open and shut case, my friends. I can’t believe the Principal of Gloucester High was so stupid as to believe the “coincidence” of 17 pregnancies (a number four-times higher than the average number of pregnancies at Gloucester High) was the result of some sort of crazy pact.

I bet he was just pulling a practical joke on everyone — one of the girls was impregnated by a “24-year-old homeless guy”, yeah right! What does this guy take us for, a bunch of morans? Well, it looks like the joke’s on him!

But wait a minute. Why is Lindsey Oliver such a reliable source for debunking the pregnancy pact. You’d think a principal of a high school would be a more reliable and trustworthy source than a girl who couldn’t…well, let’s just leave it at that.

And what does Miss Oliver know? According to Time Magazine’s article, none of the girls who made the pact where over 16. The virginally-liberated Miss Oliver is probably just jealous because she couldn’t be part of the pact, since she was too old.

“I’ll show those girls to exclude me from their pact. I’ll go on national television and say there was no pact. That’ll teach’um!”

Of course, this is all speculation on my part, but apparently I’m not the only one who thinks something smells in Gloucester.

Mayor’s denial does little to KO pregnancy pact story

GLOUCESTER – The reporter is backing off the story and the mayor is denying it, but residents and students say they still believe the so-called Gloucester High School pregnancy pact really happened.

High school students in downtown Gloucester were equally skeptical of the mayor’s denial, with several naming those involved and telling the Herald the alleged pact was common knowledge around school.

So let us recap.

Principal: Pregnancy pact, true.
Mayor: Pregnancy pact, not true.
Citizens: Oh, it’s true, and we know who the girls are.
And it’s not that, Lindsey Oliver, she’s too old.
(Okay, they didn’t actually say that last part, I added that.)

I’m so confused now, I don’t know who to believe anymore.

Actually, I’m thinking the story of the pact is true, and the fair city of Gloucester is just a little embarrassed by all the attention this story’s given them. They don’t want everyone to think they’re loose on moral values. I mean this is Massachusetts after all! Can’t have a silly story about a teen-pregnancy pact tarnish their lustrous image.

Well, one thing is for sure. They’re going to need more staff in the school nursery by next semester.
